After you are done with the realism settings, you have officialy upgraded your flight experience. Now the aircraft shall respond in more realistic ways, according to which type of aircraft you fly.

Now, you should start making the flight simulator look like a simulator - that is done by changing the settings in the 'GRAPHICS' menu. From the 'SETTINGS' window, click on the 'Customize' button (it is located at the buttom of the window).

Make sure that all of the settings in that window are as same as in the following pictures, as it is a good starting point. (navigate to the different sections according to the images' order. Please do make changes if necassery). Now, after you have found the file, right-click on it, and press 'Edit'. If you do not see 'Edit' as an option, you need to try running the 'fsx.CFG' file using Notepad, or another program (notepad works great!). You can do it by right-clicking on the 'fsx.CFG' file, looking for the option 'Open' (usually the first one).

Then, a pop-up will promote you to look on the internet for a program that can open the file. No need for that, just click on the 'Open with.' Option, and choose the Notepad.

This tweak is supposed to make 3D rendering more efficient on PC's with a high-end video card. This section does not exist by default in the 'fsx.CFG' file, and we will need to add it up (have no fear - the simulator knows how to handle it). What this does is sending data directly from the CPU to your GPU, that way your PC will not need to use RAM in order to load different textures. Some users report artifacts while using this tweak.

From my personal experience, I have never saw any artifacts, nor anybody I know. I consider this tweak as a 'Must have'. Now, while Fraps runs on the background, open your flight simulator and load a flight in a place with a scenery, your favorite aircraft, etc. Make sure you have the Fraps FPS counter at the corner of the screen. Then, takeoff and fly above the airport in a straight line (autopilot is very recommended).

From your cockpit view, hit the Benchmarking Hotkey you've set and keep the simulator running until the benchmarking ends (if you wrote the value 45 as I said, for example, it will end in 45 seconds since you've pressed the Benchmarking Hotkey). After the benchmarking is done (you can tell by the fact that the FPS counter has appeared again) you can close your flight simulator and go to the following folder: Drive: Program Files Fraps Benchmarks, and look for the one with the current date and time or the one that is closest to the date of benchmarking.

Open it, and you can see the details of the recent benchmark. That way, you can know if the tweaks are helping (after every tweak, check for a rise in Average FPS. If there is a rise, you're doing good. If there isn't, consider deleting the last tweak you've applied.
